OTDR Usage & Trace Analysis
A practical, vendor-neutral course on operating an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer and reading what its traces actually tell you — built for FTTH/PON technicians commissioning and troubleshooting real fibre plant on the Vobiss / 4Power network.
How this course is built
Every module follows the same rhythm: the concept explained properly, a plain-English “in plain terms” box for each major idea, a hands-on simulator you can poke at to feel how the concept behaves, and a short self-check quiz. Four of the simulators are large, deep tools (trace builder, parameter setup, fault locator, bidirectional); the rest are focused mini-sims that live inside their module.
Think of an OTDR like sonar for a glass thread. It pings light down the fibre and listens for echoes. This course teaches you to read those echoes the way a doctor reads an ultrasound — what every bump, dip and spike means, and how to act on it.
What an OTDR Is & When to Use One
An OTDR sends light into one end of a fibre and listens to the faint light that comes back. From the timing and strength of those returns it reconstructs a picture of the entire link — loss, distance, and the location of every joint, bend and break — all from a single end.
The core idea: echo-location in glass
The instrument fires a brief, intense pulse of laser light into the fibre, then switches into “listen” mode. As the pulse races down the glass at roughly 200,000 km per second, a tiny fraction is constantly scattered backwards toward the instrument. Wherever the pulse hits something abrupt — a connector, a splice, a break — a stronger echo bounces back. The OTDR times each returning photon: light that comes back quickly came from nearby; light that comes back later came from further away. Multiply travel time by the speed of light in glass, halve it (the light went out and came back), and you have distance. Measure how strong the return is and you have loss.
Stand at the mouth of a long tunnel and clap once. A quick echo means a wall is close; a slow echo means it’s far. A loud echo means a hard flat surface; a soft echo means something that absorbs sound. The OTDR does exactly this with light instead of sound, and draws you a map of the whole tunnel from where you’re standing.

The power meter is the bathroom scale — it gives the total, pass or fail, but not why. The VFL is a torch you shine in one end to spot an obvious leak. The OTDR is the full body scan: the total and every individual problem, with its exact location.
What a trace looks like
The screen plots returned power (dB, vertical) against distance (km, horizontal). A healthy fibre is a gently descending straight line — that downward slope is the fibre’s attenuation. Riding on it are the events: small steps down (splices/bends), sharp spikes (connectors/reflections), and a final cliff into noise (the end or a break).
When you reach for an OTDR
Use an OTDR to…
- Measure each splice, connector and fibre section individually
- Locate a break, crush or macrobend to within a metre
- Verify construction quality before acceptance
- Capture an as-built / baseline trace
- Find a fault years later by overlaying on the baseline
It is poor at…
- Absolute end-to-end loss (the power meter is the reference)
- Seeing two events too close together (dead zone)
- Short jumpers without a launch fibre
- Telling a splice from a connector without reflectance
